JFD Roster Review: Running Backs

In our first roster review piece we took a look at the offensive line.  Now, it’s time to look at the skill position of running backs.

The Jets currently have 8 backs on their roster and will look to trim that down.  Of course, a lot of this depends on the situation of newly acquired Mike Goodson, who will have his day in court.  New general manager John Idzik is clearly letting the legal process play out before he does anything irrational with Goodson.  Goodson reportedly met with Jets brass and explained his situation about a week ago.  The Jets and the NFL are holding him out of OTA’s for the time being.

Key Loss

RB, Shonn Greene

Key Additions

RB, Mike Goodson

RB, Chris Ivory

FB, Tommy Bohanon

Greene is a key loss but only because he was starting last year.  The Jets were absolutely 100% right to let him walk in Free Agency.  As a matter of fact, I’m surprised he didn’t trip on his way out.

Chris Ivory is your starter.  He was traded for and brought in to be a starter.  He’ll get his chance to shine.  A lot of people are high on Ivory but he hasn’t faced 8 or 9 players in the box because he had a valuable commodity at quarterback in Drew Brees.  It’ll be interesting to see what he can do in New York, where the whole league knows the Jets want to run the ball.  Ivory will need to deal with that reality. Let’s hope he’s as good as he’s shown in spurts for the Saints.

Goodson is 50/50 to be on the roster at this point.  He’s facing a very serious charges and is due in court soon.

Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell might be battling it out for the last spot on the roster.  McKnight believes the spot is his to lose and he very well could be right.  He offers something Powell doesn’t: Special Teams play-making ability.  However, they could both be safe is Goodson goes.

Drafting FB Tommy Bohanon doesn’t bode well for Lex Hilliard.  Unless Bohanon stinks it up in camp, Hilliard will most likely be cut.
