Scouting The Draft: TE, Jace Amaro, Texas Tech

According to Manish Mehta, the Jets are interested in Jace Amaro and plan on working him out.  Amaro is the tall, athletic tight end out of Texas Tech.  However, many believe it’s a smoke screen in light of the many “misses” related to what Idzik and company did in Free Agency.  We’ll see what happens but I decided to take a look at anyway.

Height: 6’5 3/8″ Weight: 265 Lbs Age: 21 Bench: 28 reps 40 Time: 4.68

Broad Jump: 118″ Vertical: 33″ 20 Yd Shuttle: 4.3 3-Cone: 6.89

Arm Length: 34″ Hands: 9″ Projected: 1st, 2nd, 3rd

Top performer in almost every category at the combine, Amaro is an ultra-athletic tight end.  Amaro also fits the mold of the type of tight end the NFL is trending towards.  A “move the chains” type tight end with a knack for getting open (106 receptions his junior year).  Can make something out of nothing; Rarely negative yardage plays.  Athletic tight end frame with a slot-WR type ability to get open.

He can be a slot-WR blocker who is able to block defensive backs but not in-line against NFL sized defensive lineman.  Has some drop tendencies that I noticed on film.  The ones I saw were from bad technique and could possibly be remedied with proper coaching.  Amaro had rough 2012: He was ejected from bowl game in 2012 for throwing punch.  Also, was arrested for unauthorized use of credit card.

Comparable Player: Vernon Davis

Rumored Team Interest: Steelers, Jets
